Saina Nehwal defended her Senior Nationals title by defeating world No. 6 PV Sindhu in straight games in Guwahati in the women’s singles category. In the men’s singles event, Sourabh Verma got the better of young Lakshya Sen in a one-sided match in the 83rd edition of the tournament.

Verma dominated against 17-year-old Sen from the very beginning of the game as he put his opponent under pressure forcing him to make mistakes. The 26-year-old, who had won the title back in 2011 and 2017, took the first game by 21-18. The second one was much easier for Verma as he managed to win it 21-13 and consequently the title, for the third time in his career.

In the women’s singles event, the top two shuttlers Nehwal and Sindhu were up against each other in front of a packed house in Guwahati. Nehwal defended her senior nationals title against the Telangana star by winning the summit clash in straight games 21-18, 21-15. At the mid-game break in the first game, Nehwal had an 11-10 lead and then cruised along nicely to take an early lead of 1-0 in the match by winning the first game. With an 11-9 lead in the second game, Nehwal didn’t let the match go into the final game by taking the second one by a comfortable 21-15.

Earlier on the day, the second-seeded pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Chirag Shetty won the men’s doubles title after getting the better of top seeds Arjun M R and Shlok Ramchandran 21-13 22-20 in the final which lasted for only 33 minutes.
