BWF Dutch Open | Lakshya Sen stages brilliant comeback to lift maiden World Tour title
India’s young sensation Lakshya Sen made a stunning comeback in the BWF Dutch Open as he came from one-game down to defeat Japan's Yusuke Onodera 15-21 21-14 21-15 for his first BWF World Tour title. Sen had won the Belgian Open last month and reached the finals of the Polish Open as well.
India's 18-year-old shuttler Sen was up against world no.160 Japanese Yusuke Onodera in the summit clash on Sunday and despite being a higher-ranked shutter at 72nd, the Indian had to come up with a grueling fight to win the coveted trophy, a first for his career.
The opening game saw Sen falling behind very early and it was too late before he came back to remove the deficit. Though he came close in 10-11 and 13-14, the Japanese as smart enough to keep the lead, however, slim at every point of the game. He eventually won it by a six points lead at 21-15.
The second game saw Sen coming out in a more resolute manner in his play and after some close rallies, the Indian was seen taking an 8-5 lead. Lakhsya again managed to move to 12-8 with four straight points. And although Onodera trimmed the lead to just one in 11-12, Sen was quick to take a seven-point lead at 18-11 before leveling the match 1-1 by winning 21-14.
The decider wasn’t as exciting as it was expected to be as Sen had understood his strategy and stuck to it lead 9-4 before leading 11-8 at the break. Though Onodera showed intent to fight back, Sen knew he had the match in his hands and won it 21-15. The match lasted for 63 minutes.
Sen has previously won the Asian Junior Championships, a silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games, and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships last year.
