Kidambi Srikanth has retracted his participation from the upcoming BWF events China Open and Korea Open citing a knee injury as the reason for the same. The former world number one has often suffered from bouts of injuries which have kept him from fulfilling his potential in the international arena.

Kidambi Srikanth on Friday confirmed that he has pulled out from the next two major events lined up in the BWF calendar due to a recurring knee injury. He was scheduled to take on compatriot Sai Praneeth in the Super 1000 event in Changzhou on the 17th of September, with the tournament scheduled to run until the 22nd of the same month. Soon after, the Korea Super 500 Open was slated from the 24th to the 29th of September.

“Tough times. Will not be playing in the upcoming #ChinaOpen and #KoreaOpen due to knee injury. Hope to recover quick and get back in action soon,” Srikanth’s tweet read, reported TOI.

He first came under the spotlight a couple of years earlier when he ascended the world rankings quickly to reach the peak. His emergence was catapulted by four Superseries wins a single year, while having reached the final of another. However, constant injury issues have since kept him from emulating the same form of success.

"In the last eight to 10 months, I haven't been able to train for a long period. I was getting injured and then coming back and training for a week or two and then playing a tournament, and then I'm pushing too much at the tournaments and injuring myself again,” he had said in an interview with BWF.

He had most recently taken part in the BWF World Championships where he had exited in the Round of 16 after losing to Thailand’s Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

"I want to go back and train for a longer period, and I think if I can do that for the next 12 months, I will be in good shape for the Olympics," Srikkanth had added.
