India’s women’s singles badminton coach Kim Ji Hyun has put down her papers as he decided not to continue with the Indian contingent any more for personal reasons. Her husband has suffered a neuro stroke and the South Korean has now decided to travel to New Zealand to attend him.

Indian badminton suffered a massive jolt as the women’s singles coach Kim Ji Hyun stepped down from her position with less than a year to go for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She was appointed by the Badminton Association of India (BAI) earlier this year and played an important role in guiding PV Sindhu during the World Championships.

The 45-year-old coach from Busan, South Korea, has now travelled to New Zealand to be with her husband Ritchie Marr who suffered a neuro stroke recently.

“It is true, Kim has resigned as her husband is pretty unwell. He suffered a kind of neuro stroke sometime during the World Championship. So she rushed back. She needs to take care of him as it will take around 4 to 6 months for him to recover,” India’s chief national coach Pullela Gopichand told PTI.

Kim is India’s third foreign coach, after Indonesia’s Mulyo Handoyo and Malaysia’s Tan Kim, to step down before completing her tenure. The BAI will now try to find a replacement for the South Korean keeping the Olympic qualification in mind for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

“We are trying to get someone to fill in her boots. But it will be again a stop-gap arrangement. We need to find a permanent solution,” Gopichand explained.
