Odisha to see new Badminton High Performance Centre
The Odisha state government has been all hands in constructing a multi-purpose indoor hall inside the Kalinga Stadium campus, which would serve as a Badminton High Performance Centre and would be ready before February 2020. The government has been getting support from Dalmia Bharat Group.
With the kind of interest Odisha has shown in setting up state of art facilities for various sports in recent years, it was time badminton got one for itself in the state. Pullela Gopichand has voiced his concern about the plummeting talent pool in the sport with the existing likes of PV Sindhu, B Sai Praneeth, Saina Nehwal and more, who are holding the mantle now, being the last elite shuttlers from the nation.
Hence, keeping an eye on producing more athletes and coaches in the immediate future, the Odisha government announced on Friday that it has approved the setting up of a Badminton High-Performance Centre, which would amount to Rs 30 crore.
“I am sure the High-Performance Centre will be one of the top international standard training centres of our country. The state government has provided three acres of land for the centre,” Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, report PTI.
The state government would be getting support from Dalmia Bharat Group for the building of the multi-purpose indoor hall, which has been scheduled to be complete by February 2020. “Promotion of sports by industrial houses is a winning combination. My government will always encourage such initiatives for the cause of sports in Odisha,” the chief minister added.
