A coordination committee has been formed between the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the ad-hoc committee governing Indian boxing to end infighting in the fraternity, organise events and pick the probables for next year’s Asia Olympic qualifiers. The committee is headed by veteran administrator Asit Banerjee and has eight zonal representatives.

Indian pugilists displayed tremendous resilience in the face of adversity with six boxers qualifying for the World Championships in Doha earlier this month through the Asian Championships in Bangkok. Sadly, the boxers had to compete under the International Boxing Association (AIBA) flag due to the absence of a recognised national federation.

Shiva Thapa won a bronze in the bantam 56kg category to become only the third Indian ever to win a World Championship medal after Vikas Krishan and Vijender Singh.

The committee will first organise an all-India men's tournament next month in Goa to pick the probables for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in China in March. The tournament has been cleared by AIBA after being put through by the ad-hoc committee.

“The coordination committee has been formed to ensure that there is no indiscipline and every process is streamlined. The first step towards this is the all-India meet where we are expecting 210 boxers from 19 teams,” Banerjee was quoted by PTI news agency. A similar meet for women is to be held in Bhopal in December.

SAI will provide its facilities to conduct the tournament, the ad-hoc committee will provide the ring officials and other technical staff," Banerjee said. "This coordination committee will henceforth be responsible for the conduct of domestic tournaments. The ad-hoc committee will take care of international tournaments. This will ensure that there is no indiscipline as all proposals will go through the ad-hoc committee.”
