British professional boxing star Amir Khan said on Monday that after the much-anticipated WBC title contest against Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez, he is keen to take on Vijender Singh in the Indian’s own backyard. Khan will take on Alvarez at Las Vegas on May 7 for the WBC world middleweight title.

Speaking to the Indian media from San Francisco, ahead of his title fight, Khan said that he would like to fight Indian pugilist Vijender Singh, who has been undefeated in his professional boxing career so far.

“Vijender Singh is the talent that India has in professional boxing and I would want to fight him in India soon,” he said, reported PTI.

“I am a big fan of Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. They are what they are because they had the opportunities. The same is most of us and that’s why I want to create these academies so that the facilities reach to all corners of India. I hope to create world-class boxers and MMA fighters in the next 2-3 years from India,” he added.

The Olympic silver medallist and two-time world champion, who recently announced his plans to start boxing academies in India and Pakistan, had earlier welcomed Vijender to the professional boxing arena back in November.

“Vijender's act will promote pro boxing in India. Because most of these amateur boxers don’t know about pro boxing, so Vijender's foray will open the doors for them further. He has won one fight and he has the next one coming up. So yes, I really think he's going to promote it well and he will go a long, long way. In the next five years, I can see a big change in boxing in India,” Khan had told IBNLive.com.

Vijender had made his pro-boxing debut in October last year and has been on an unbeaten run, defeating Sonny Whiting, Dean Gillen, Samet Hyuseinov and Alexander Horvath via knockouts. The 2008 Olympics bronze-medallist will take on Frenchman Matiouze Royer in his fifth bout on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena in London.
