Mary Kom and Vikas Krishan honoured by AIBA
Indian boxing ace Mary Kom and Arjuna award winner Vikas Krishan were honoured by AIBA during the world body’s 70th anniversary gala in Montreux, Switzerland, on Wednesday (Dec 21). While Mary Kom was given the Legends award, Krishan won the Pro Boxing (APB) best boxer trophy.
Five-time world champion Mary Kom was recognised for her outstanding achievements in amateur boxing and for setting an example and inspiring millions of youngsters across the world.
Mary Kom has decided to drop down from flyweight (51 kg) to light flyweight (48 kg) and is aiming for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo after failing to qualify for the Rio Games in August.
Krishan lost in the quarterfinals at Rio in the 75kg category. The 24-year-old competed in two AIBA Pro Boxing bouts this year.
“I would like to thank AIBA President Dr Wu for giving me this award along with APB Director Mr Mirko Wolf. We had no federation for the last four years but now we have one and all of them are working hard and I hope we will do well in the future,” Krishan told PTI news agency.
