Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar clinch Gold at Czech Boxing Tournament

Asian Games silver-medalist Shiva Thapa and Commonwealth Games gold-medalist Manoj Kumar won gold after winning their respective bouts in the 48th Grand Prix Usti Nad Labem boxing tournament in the Czech Republic. In total, India claimed five golds, two silvers and one bronze at the event.

Indian boxers showed their golden punch in the Czech boxing tournament as Thapa (60kg), Manoj (69kg), Amit Phangal (52kg), Gaurav Bidhuri (56kg) and Satish Kumar (+91kg) claimed gold medals after winning their respective encounters last night.

On the other hand, Kavinder Bisht (52kg) and Manish Panwar (81kg) won silver medals for the country. Earlier, Sumit Sangwan (91kg) had claimed a bronze after going down in the semifinals.

Thapa won his fight 5-0 against Slovakia’s Filip Meszaros. This victory will definitely boost the confidence of Indian boxers during next month’s World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. 

Another boxer, Manoj, too claimed a 5-0 win against local favourite David Kotrc.

The tournament marked the end of a two-week long training-cum-competition trip for the Indian boxers ahead of the world showpiece scheduled from August 25 to September 2. 

Seven of the nine Indian boxers who participated in the Czech boxing tournament have qualified for the prestigious event.

Vikas Krishan Yadav (75Kg) has also qualified for the World Championships and currently, he is training in Pune.
