India Open boxing | Sumit Sangwan, Sarjubala Devi assured medals; Shiva Thapa reaches quarters

Sumit Sangwan, in 91 kg category, and Sarjubala Devi, in 51 kg category, ensured that India will win medals at the inaugural India Open boxing tournament. Shiva Thapa produced a brilliant performance against Dorji Wangdi in his opening clash to win the bout and book a place in the quarterfinals.

Asian silver-medalist Sangwan defeated Virender Kaushik 5-0 secure a place the semi-final of the competition. In the women’s competition, Sarjubaja and Pinki Jangra (51 Kg) also reached in the semifinal of the USD 1,00,000 event.

Before Sangwan won his bout, though, Sarjubala ensured that India's first medal in the competition after she handed a loss to Kenya's Christine Ongare 5-0. From the start of the bout, the world championships silver-medallist was aggressive and gave her opponent no chance to come back into the fight. In the semifinal bout, she will face Mongolian Jargalan Ochirbat, who defeated former junior world champion Nikhat Zareen to book the next round berth. Pinki Jangra registered a 5-0 victory over Jordan's Al-Mriheel.

Bronze winner at the world youth championships, Naman Tanwar (91 Kg) managed to make a superb debut on the senior circuit as he beat Jordan’s Eishaish Hussein in the heavyweight category. The win helped him in reach the semis and be assured of a medal.

Shiva Thapa (60 Kg) easily entered in the quarterfinals as the three-time Asian medalist outclassed Bhutan's Dorji Wangdi and in the next round, he will fight Uzbekistan's Sherbek Rakhmatulloev. Manish Kaushik (60Kg) also used the platform to showcased his talent as the national champion outclassed Cuba’s Rabi Armando Martinez.

Amit Phangal, the Asian bronze-medallist also moved on to the last-eight after receiving a walkover against Afghanistan’s Ramish Rahmani. In the next round, the Indian will face Cameroon's Fotsala Simplice.

K Shyam Kumar (49Kg), who won a gold medal in the King’s Cup, managed to reach in the quarters after winning the contest against Neeraj Swami. It was not a good day for Sachin Siwach (49Kg) who lost a close fight against Thailand's Thani Narinram.
