Boxing | Four Indian male and female boxers advance in Kaspiysk

Indian women boxers continued their good vein of form as four of them booked their place in the penultimate round of a tournament in Kaspiysk with good chances of bringing home a medal. Meanwhile, four of their male compatriots reached the last-eight stage in what has been a successful outing.

The Magomed Salam Umakhanov Memorial International Boxing Tournament being held in Russia has so far, been dominated by Indians as eight of the 11 participating in the tournament are still in the running for a medal. More than 200 boxers from 21 nations are participating in what is the 21st edition of the competition.

Lovlina Borgohain swept aside local Anastasiya Sagaeva 5-0 to book her place in the next round match against Belarus’ Alina Veber in the race to the final. The 21-year-old has been in good form of late and is a world-bronze winner, having secured third place in the Strandja Memorial Cup earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, premier boxer and Asian gold medallist Pooja Rani defeated yet another localite as she triumphed 4-1 over Laura Mamedkulova in the 75 kg category. Indian Open champion Neeraj further dented the chances of the home country’s boxers as the lightweight boxer recorded a 4-1 win over Sayana Sagataeva. 

Jony rounded off the list as she fought off Belarus’ Anastasiya Obushenkova in what turned out to be a comfortable victory, defeating her - in the 60 kg category. As for the men, four of the six players who had entered into the tournament remained in the hunt for a medal as they successfully reached the quarter-final stage on Wednesday.

Ashish Insha’s victory over Azerbaijan’s Salman Alizade 4-1 in the 52 kg category meant that he joined GeeBee Boxing runner-up Govind Sahani(49 kg), Indian Open champion Sanjeet(91 kg) and Commonwealth Games winner Gaurav Solanki(56 kg) in the last-eight.

Pinki Jangra was the only compatriot to get knocked out in the latest round of action as she fell 0-5 to Belarus’ Yuliya Apanasovich in the latest round of action, failing to replicate her form from the India Open where she won the gold medal in the 51 kg category.
