Strandja Memorial Boxing | Gaurav Solanki and Nikhat Zareen advance to next round

Indian boxer Gaurav Solanki has made it to the men’s pre-quarters of the 70th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Bulgaria’s Sofia in the 52 kg category. In the women’s event 51 kg, India’s Nikhat Zareen also advanced to the quarterfinal round of the same tournament in Bulgaria.

Solanki defeated American boxer Abraham Perez to progress into the round of 16 where he would be fighting Anvar Muzaparov from Kazakhstan. On the other hand, Zareen got the better of Italy’s Giovanna Marchese in her opening battle of the championship and would be facing Belarus' Yana Burym in the next round.

In the men’s 60 kg category, India’s Ankush Dahiya also played well to make it to the pre-quarters of the prestigious event by winning his first game by a split verdict against Sarkhan Aliyev of Azerbaijan. He will take on Macedonian Jasin Ljama in the next round. India’s Neeraj defeated Bulgarian Aslahan Mehmedova in the women's 60kg category.

In other bouts, Gaurav Bidhuri (56 kg) lost his first-round game against home player Emanuil Bogoev in a split decision. Ashish Kumar in 75 kg and Ashish in 64 kg events also lost their respective bouts in split decisions.

Former Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Pinki Jangra was beaten by Irish Magno of Philippines in a split verdict. Nupur (75kg) and Neetu (75kg) were also knocked out of the event after losing to their Italian and Russian opponents. 

India grabbed two gold medals and as many as 11 total medals in the tournament last year. In the current edition, more than 300 boxers from 40 different countries are taking part in the event.
