Services’ boxers dominate proceedings in semi-finals of Youth Nationals
As many as nine Services’ boxers have made it to the finals of the ongoing Third Youth Boxing Nationals being held at Rudrapur in Uttarakhand on Wednesday. The pugilists from Rajasthan had a great day in the ring and five of them managed to get an entry in the final round of the tournament.
With two of India’s top youth boxers in the contingent of the Services, they have continued their dream run in the premier junior tournament of the country. Bhavesh Kattimani defeated local favourite Sanjay Kumar by a unanimous decision and will now face Haryana’s Ankit in the 52kg final. Vijay Deep also had an easy outing with his opponent getting knocked out in the very first round of the semi-final bout.
Assam’s Bullen Buragohain managed to beat Chandigarh’s Parveen Singh with a split verdict of 4-1 in the 56kg semi-final game on the penultimate day of the tournament. Satender Singh failed to make it to the finals as he was beaten by Haryana’s Harsh Gill in the 91kg weight category in a split decision. Seven of the Haryana boxers have also made it to the finals of the ongoing tournament in various different categories.
Two pugilists from Delhi and one each from Assam and Uttar Pradesh have also qualified for the finals. In the women’s categories, Haryana was the most dominating state in the semi-final round and seven of the state boxers have qualified for the finals. Rajasthan, however, had a surprising performance in the semi-final round and five from there made it to the finals.
