Indian Open Boxing | Mary Kom beats Nikhat Zareen to storm into the final

Veteran Indian female boxer MC Mary Kom won her semi-final bout by 4-1 split decision against compatriot Nikhat Zareen and made it to the final of the ongoing India Open Boxing tournament in Guwahati. Mary Kom will face another Indian pugilist Vanlal Duati in the 51kg category final. 

Six-time World Champion MC Mary Kom was up against fellow Indian and former World Junior Champion Nikhat Zareen in the semi-final of the 51kg category in Guwahati. This was the most talked about game of the entire tournament and all the eyes were on the youngster against the veteran star Mary Kom. However, 36-year-old Mary prevailed over the 22-year-old boxer from Telangana by winning the bout by a split decision of 4-1 to book a place in the finals.

Mary Kom will now take on Mizoram’s Vanlal Duati in the final of the category after the Mizo girl had managed to get the better of Youth World Champion Jyoti Gulia in the other semi-final clash of the 51kg category in women’s boxing. In other matches, Kalaivani was defeated by Josie Anape Gabuco of Philippines by a 5-0 verdict while Manju Rani was defeated by Monika.

In the 64kg semi-final bout, two boxers from the host state Assam Pwilao Basumatary and Ankushita Boro were up against each other and it was Boro who did well against Basumatary to book a place in the final of this category.

Lovlina Borgohain got a walkover in the 69kg category semi-final while Bhagyabati Kachari defeated Nupur in the 75kg category to get a ticket for the summit clash. Jamuna Boro won the 54kg semi-final against Meenakumari of Manipur while Assunta Canfora cruised into the final of the 69kg category after winning her semi-final round encounter against Anjali.
