World Women's Boxing Ch’ships | Jamuna Boro stuns Ouidad Sfouh to enter quarters
It was a great day for India’s women boxing contingent at the World Women's Boxing Championships, being held in Russia, as debutant Jamuna Boro pulled off a major upset in the last-16 stage. The pugilist from Assam has now advanced to the quarterfinals and is one win away from securing a medal.
Competing in the 54kg weight category, Jamuna Boro was up against Algeria’s Ouidad Sfouh in the last-16 stage on Wednesday, and fighting against the African Games gold-medalist obviously made the second favourite in the bout.
However, the 22-year-old was at her very best and pulled off a massive upset by completely dominating the African. Starting in a slow manner initially, Boro grew into the match and was aggressive by the time she was winning every round.Â
It has been her debut campaign and as the bout progressed, she hardly looked a rookie. Though the second and the third rounds were engaging but Boro’s clean jabs saw her winning the bout by a 5-0 unanimous verdict. Born in a family in poverty, Boro’s mother worked as a vegetable and came to the tournament at the back of a gold medal in India Open. Apart from, she also won a bronze-medallist at the 2015 Youth World Championships.
