Women's World Boxing Ch’ships | MC Mary Kom settles for bronze after losing semi-final bout
MC Mary Kom had to be satisfied with a bronze medal as she lost her semi-final bout against Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu in the 51kg weight category at the ongoing Women’s World Boxing Championships. After a dream run till the semi-finals, Mary Kom lost the semi-final by a split verdict.
Although Mary Kom added yet another World Championship medal to her tally, she failed to make it to the summit clash. The Indian boxer was defeated by Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu in the 51kg semi-final in Ulan-Ude, Russia. The split verdict went against the 36-year-old Manipuri on Saturday. Mary Kom, who thought she'd done enough to claim the win, was left in shock after the verdict went against her.
Fighting against a much younger opponent from Turkey, the Indian tried to play on the counter but failed to have an impact on the semi-final clash. Mary Kom came out with an aggreassive intent in the second round but that was not enough for her to go into the finals and eventually it was a 4-1 decision in favour of the Turkey pugilist.
There are still hopes from other Indian female boxers in this global event in Russia. In the evening session today, Manju Rani will play her semi-final clash in the 48 kg category while in the 54kg and 69 kg weight categories, Jamuna Bora and Lovlina Borgohain will also be in action in the top four clashes.
