Olympic Test Event | Shiva Thapa and Pooja Rani qualify for finals
Indian boxers Shiva Thapa and Pooja Rani have made it to the final round of the ongoing Olympic Test Event for boxing in Tokyo on Wednesday. On the other hand, Nikhat Zareen and Vahlimpuia lost their respective semi-final bouts and had to be satisfied with a bronze medal each at the Test event.
Shiva Thapa and Pooja Rani had a great time in the ring on Wednesday as both of them won their semi-final bouts to make their way into the summit round of the Olympic Test Event in Japan’s Tokyo.
In the men’s 63 kg category, National Champion Thapa got the better of local pugilist Daisuke Narimatsu by a split decision while former bronze-medallist at the Asiad Rani also marched into the final of the women’s 75 kg event with a win against Brazil’s Beatriz Soares in a unanimous decision.
However, Nikhat Zareen (51kg) and Vahlimpuia (75kg) lost their respective semi-final bouts and managed to clinch bronze medals. Zareen, a former junior World Champion, lost in a split decision to Japan’s Sana Kawano while Vahlimpuia was defeated by another Japanese Yuito Moriwaki in a unanimous verdict by the judges.
Sumit Sangwan (91kg), Ashish (69kg), and Simranjeet Kaur (60kg) will also take to the ring for their respective semi-final encounters.
