IOM Chess Meet | Viswanathan Anand finishes at joint second; Vidit Gujrathi signs off at third

Viswanathan Anand took 53 moves to overcome Chinese grandmaster Hou Yifan, in the ninth and final round, to finish the Isle Of Man Chess tournament in joint second position. Meanwhile, Vidit Santosh Gujrathi and Swapnil S Dhopade finished at the joint third position with 6.5 points each.

Five-time World Champion Anand had a wonderful run at the tournament and capped that off with a victory over Chinese grandmaster Hou Yifan in the ninth and final round of the tournament. Anand took 53 moves in the final round to finish with 7 points and shared the second spot with America’s Nakamura Hikaru. World Champion Magnus Carlsen won the title with 7.5 points after a short draw against Nakamura and pocketed a prize of £50,000.

Other Indians in the fray, Vidit Gujrathi and Swapnil Dhopade finished at the joint third position with 6.5 points after playing out draws against Hungarian Rapport Richard and Ukraine’s Eljanov Pavel respectively.

Among other Indians, Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan ended at the joint 13th spot with six points after signing a "peace treaty" with Vallejo Pons Francisco. SP Sethuraman fell spectacularly and after a draw against compatriot Swayams Mishra, finished with 5 points at the 48th place. Harika Dronavalli and Adhiban B ended the tournament with wins over Degtiarev Evgeny and Batsiashvili Nino respectively while youngster R Praggnanandhaa also ended his campaign with a victory over Balint Vilmos.
