Anju Jain appreciates Bangladesh Women team's efforts in the Asia Cup
Bangladesh Women’s team coach Anju Jain has appreciated the hard work that every player has put in to improve themselves which eventually helped them secure a win against India in the final of the Asia Cup. Jain insisted that it was a huge moment for the team to have achieved such a milestone.
Three weeks into her coaching stint with Bangladesh Women team, Anju Jain has transformed the team from the ‘minnows’ to the ‘champions’. Bangladesh, who were the only team to beat India in the league stage, stunned the six-time Asia Cup winners in the final with a dramatic three-wicket win to lift their first Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Jain has previously coached the Indian Women's team at the 2012 T20 WC and 2013 World Cup, however, this is Jain's maiden stint with an overseas side. Given the little time she had to make changes to the team, she has done a remarkable job to transform the fortunes of the team. However, after the memorable show, the former Indian women's team star appreciated the work put in by the players and felt proud of their glorious triumph.
"This is a huge moment for the team and personally for me also. After the team returned from South Africa, I identified the areas that needed attention. It was a massive challenge, but I must compliment the girls as they made a genuine effort to implement every single thing that I pointed out," Anju Jain told TOI.
It was only the last month that Bangladesh were destroyed on the tour of South Africa, where they failed to win a single match. South Africa secured a 5-0 victory in the ODI series and blanked them 3-0 in the T20 series. After the disastrous series, the Bangladesh board didn't renew the contract of coach David Capel, a former England allrounder, and appointed Jain, who took charge on May 21.
"Joining Bangladesh was a fast-tracked move. The team was in bad shape and I was only looking to boost their morale," the former India wicketkeeper-opener said.
Prior to accepting the Bangladesh offer, Jain helped the Vidarbha team top the Plate Group title in the domestic one-day tournament for the first time.
