VIDEO | PSL umpire adjudges LBW after ball misses leg completely
While Ramiz Raja might sleep peacefully at night believing that Pakistan Super League is only second to Indian Premier League, it’s constantly dropping standards clearly states otherwise. Wednesday saw one such instance when Misbah-ul-Haq was given LBW even when the ball clearly hit only his gloves.
Though Pakistan Cricket Board’s attempt to imitate BCCI’s successful venture, IPL, had novelty, it had evidently lacked foresight and planning. After their failure to move the games to Pakistan owing to security issues affected the league massively, the repeated betting and match-fixing scandals in the past two seasons have further tainted their image.
If that was not enough, the third edition of the league has now shown lapses at the very fundamental level. The incident in question took place on Wednesday in the match between Islamabad United (ISU) vs Quetta Gladiators (QG). After ISU got off to a poor start batting first, which saw them losing Chadwick Walton and Asif Ali in the first five overs for just 25 runs, Luke Ronchi and JP Duminy held the mast steady.
Former Pakistan skipper Misbah came into bat after Ronchi was sent back by Hasan Khan on the second ball of the ninth over. And while the outcome of the match was getting more and more obvious with every passing over, it was the umpire’s decision on the third ball of the ninth over that managed to create the headlines.
Khan’s full-pitched delivery saw Misbah attempting a sweep shot when he was only able to glove the ball away. As the batsman was finishing the run, Misbah saw the umpire raising his finger for LBW. However, the batsman instantly signalled for a DRS and the replays showed that the ball hit his gloves and involving no part of the pad whatsoever.
