IND vs NZ | Twitter reacts to Rohit and Gill vie for ‘misfield medal’ in India’s endless fielding bloopers

The grandest occasions demand extra efforts that could turn out to be defining moments of a particular exhibition. As India geared up for the main event of the 2025 Champions Trophy against New Zealand, their fielding endeavors didn’t quite send down positive vibes with numerous misfields in Dubai.
Batting first in an important game, Black Caps openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra offered a blistering start with the bat, irrespective of the former’s dismissal to Varun Chakaravarthy inside a 69-run powerplay. However, the Indian spinners pulled things in their favor despite a plethora of fielding botches, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill making it to the list.
Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips looked to switch gears at the later stage of the second powerplay, and it almost reflected a high-risk, high-reward situation. As a result, India failed to get the prices in their favour due to Rohit Sharma’s failed catching attempt at mid-wicket on the fifth ball of the 35th over off Axar Patel. His effort almost resonated with a goalkeeper’s football parlance, failing to snap the cork firmly. In the next over, Shubman Gill, sprinting along the boundary ropes from deep square leg dropped a decent chance as Phillips pulled a half-tracker from Ravindra Jadeja. These summed up the fourth dropped catch in the first innings and the Twitterverse criticised them off competing for a ‘misfield medal.

If Rohit Sharma is unfit, India need 10 more unfit players. pic.twitter.com/R7g4og3Dwl

Ruturaj Gaikward as a fielder is better than Shubman Gill

India should invest in Ruturaj Gaikward in future. pic.twitter.com/xv2dRESV8t
again dropped!
Shubman Gill dropped easy catch of dangerous Glenn Philips, this is the difference between Australia & India in big games. I still remember how amazing Australians were with fielding & catching on 19 nov, 2023.#INDvsNZ #ShubmanGill pic.twitter.com/VpALZqRIKQ
