South African Star Shocks Cricket World with Sudden Retirement!
Cricket fans have witnessed the first retirement of 2026, as a South African player announced his retirement from international cricket. And this is none other than Rassie van der Dussen, who represented the team for several years. Fans won't see him in the Proteas jersey anymore.

Fans who thought 2025 was the year of retirements noted that 2026 didn't have many major retirements. But that was until now, as Rassie van der Dussen has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. It has come up as a shock for the fans, as he was a core member of the team a few months back.
At the time when South Africa also has its eyes set on the 2027 World Cup, his retirement comes as a major setback for the team. Rassie was a key player for them in the ODI format, as he represented them across all ODI tournaments since the 2019 World Cup.

Even in the Champions Trophy 2025, he was a part of the team and helped them to reach the semi-final stages. Eventually, he was able to score runs at an average of 96.50 for the team. With approximately 5000 international runs and having experience of all formats, Dussen has retired with a legacy.
Our Take
Rassie van der Dussen was a key player for the South African team, as his contributions in the ODI format remains unmatched. But he has not been picked in the team since August 2025. Surely his retirement came as a shock decision, but it seemed that the team was already looking for a replacement.
Dussen was aged 37, and age factor played an important role in his retirement. While South Africa didn't win any major tournament with him in the team, his contributions have always been vital for the team.
