Former Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton feels that Freddie Ljungberg is not the right man to be handed the Arsenal manager job on a long term basis. Ljungberg took charge of the London club on a temporary basis after the club relieved Unai Emery of his duties following a dismal season.

In an interview with BBC, Chris Sutton has asserted that Freddie Ljungberg is not the right man to manage Arsenal on a long term basis. Ex Gunners midfielder, Ljungberg took charge of the club following the sack of Unai Emery after being 18 months in charge of the club. The 42-year-old manager played for Arsenal between 1998 and 2007, had been Emery's assistant after working with their under-23 side but has no previous managerial experience.

“Freddie said he was 100% sure they would get into the top four but based on what? It's fantasy. They need to get someone in place that they are going to get a reaction from,” Sutton told the BBC.

Ljungberg’s first game as Arsenal first-team manager didn’t go well to the plan as the team were only able to secure a single point from their 2-2 draw against Norwich City. Gunners fell behind twice and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang came to their rescue equalising both of the times. That result left Arsenal eighth in the Premier League, 21 points behind leaders Liverpool and seven behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

“Did you expect them to be much different? They need to change the model, the recruitment. Over the summer they brought in Nicolas Pepe [for £72m] but the issues were at the back,” concluded the former Blackburn player.

The North London club now welcome Brighton and Hove Albion to the Emirates on Friday. Ljungberg will be aiming to secure the first win as a manager. Meanwhile, the Arsenal board have started shortlisting managers that could be named as a successor to Unai Emery on a permanent basis.
