According to an Indian Express report, the Indian hockey players are facing an equipment crisis after the Pulwama terror attack in February. Majority of hockey sticks are imported from Pakistan but the increase in customs duty by the Indian government after the attack has made it difficult now.

After the terror attack on CRPF Jawans in Pulwama on February 14, the Indian Government decided to remove Pakistan from the Most Favoured Nation list and this led to the increase in customs duty to 200%. Meanwhile, the issue of import and export between the two countries has a bad impact on Indian hockey now.

As per the report, 90% of the hockey sticks used in India are brought from the neighbouring country as most of the sports goods manufacturers focus on cricket equipment in India.

The Indian Express reported that in 2015-16, the Department of Commerce estimated the value of sticks imported from Pakistan to be Rs 24.48 lakh. The figure jumped to Rs 2 crore by December 2018. According to the hockey players and coaches, there is a big difference in quality between the sticks made in India and that is manufactured in Pakistan.

“A ball hit with the best available Indian stick travels at a speed of 80-90 kmph whereas even the second-best Pakistani stick will send the ball flying at approximately 140 kmph. There is a vast difference in quality,” The Indian Express quoted a former national coach as saying.

The newspaper also added that the sports goods manufacturers in India are now eying to grab the opportunity as the Pakistani goods are now out of equation. They also said that there is a difficulty in acquiring raw materials in India which is the reason behind the poor quality of sticks being made here.
