Indian Oil wins Bombay Gold Cup after defeating PSB in shootout
Indian Oil defeated Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) in the penalty shootout at Mahindra Stadium, Mumbai to win the 53rd Bombay Gold Cup on Wednesday. The champion team Indian Oil managed to score on four occasions during the shootout to win the title while the PSB team could score only twice.
PSB started off the game on an attacking game as Harmanpreet Singh and Jaskaran Singh scored in the 24th and 29th minute to take an early 2-0 lead against the Indian Oil in the first
However, after the half time, Indian Oil scored four goals inside five minutes to take a lead in the summit clash. Affan Yusuf (39th min), Nilam Sanjay Xess (41st min), Talwinder Singh (43rd min) and Mohammad Raheel (44th min) were the players who put the Indian Oil side on the top in the game.
Soon after Raheel’s goal, PSB made a good comeback in the game and took a goal lead as well. They scored three goals in quick succession with Gaganpreet Singh (51st min), Jaskaran (56th min) and Harmanpreet (58th min) finding the back of the net taking them to a 5-4 lead in the dying moments of the match.
The game still had a twist in the tale with experienced VR Raghunath scoring the equaliser by converting a penalty corner just a few seconds before the final whistle and the game went into the shootout.Â
In the shootout, it was the experience of Indian Oil which helped them to win the title for the second time in a row in Mumbai.Â
"We were prepared for a high-paced and close contest. They fought very well till the end but given the experience in our side, we were confident of scoring when the opportunity arose. That's what happened when we won the short corners towards the end," Raghunath told after the game, reported TOI.
