In a gaffe of epic proportions, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar first forgot the name of Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu and then said that she is from Karnataka during a felicitation ceremony. The CM also awarded Rs 2.5 crore to Sakshi Malik and Rs 50 lakh to PV Sindhu in the ceremony.

"It's a proud moment for us that two of our daughters won medals on Raksha Bandhan festival. Sakshi Malik from Haryana and Sindhu (asks others what is her name) ... PV Sindhu from Karnataka (Sindhu is from Hyderabad)," Manohar Lal Khattar said during the event, which was hosted in Bahadurgarh, reported PTI.

The Chief Minister also insisted that the government will help in identifying athletes during their on-going police requirement drive.

"The information we have, some of those who came there, even though they came for seeking jobs, their running time record shows that they even surpassed and bettered the time of some athletes who took part in the Olympics. We will identify them and help them move forward," he said.

The Haryana government has also announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh each for Sakshi Malik's two coaches, and has also promised to open a sports nursery and stadium in her village Mokhra Khas.
