Indian golfer Shiv Chawrasia, who represented the nation at the Rio Olympics, has blasted the IOA officials for their failure to reimburse the promised preparatory money and lack of arrangements during the Games. He has said that now they will think twice before representing India at the Olympics.

India’s premier golfers Anirban Lahiri, SSP Chawrasia, and Aditi Ashok (in the women’s) represented India at the Rio Olympics as the sport made a return to the quadrennial event after an 112-year gap. However, the golfers have been left so frustrated with how the IOA has treated them during the Games and after it, leading Chawrasia to comment that they might reconsider against playing for the nation in the future editions.

They had committed Rs 30 lakh but suddenly changed it to Rs 15 lakh.

“They had committed Rs 30 lakh but suddenly changed it to Rs 15 lakh. There was written communication between us but now it’s getting difficult to retrieve the money. I have only got around Rs 5.5 lakh so far,” Chawrasia told PTI at the PGTI year-ending championship.

“Anirban’s case is worse. He hasn’t got any money. I don’t get the logic. Anirban was in USA but his manager was in Delhi. He was doing rounds of the IOA office for a long time. Every time he submitted the bills, he was asked to make a few changes and return with new bills. It continued till one day they just told him he won’t get any money since the deadline to submit bills was over. They would behave as if they were ‘maalik’ (owners) and we were their ‘naukars’ (servants)

“We had already spent that amount of money thinking we would be reimbursed. We are still golfers. But think about the other players. If it had been anybody else he would have been ruined,” the 38-year-old told PTI.

The Kolkata-born golfer went on to add that they need to concentrate on ‘tougher assignments’ instead of dealing with the IOA. He said, “We were asked to wait at the airport for four hours for a vehicle and Lahiri came on his own. We were feeling so bad. Now we will think twice before representing India at Olympics. We don’t like to keep on harping on this subject as we want to concentrate on the tougher assignments ahead,” reported Zee News.
