Shreyas Iyer has revealed that Gautam Gambhir had personally decided to sit out of their game against Kolkata Knight Riders, on Friday. The newly appointed Delhi Daredevils’ skipper also reinforced that the respect Gambhir earned inside the dressing room after his brave decision is unbelievable.

Leading Delhi Daredevils for the first time, young Shreyas Iyer made a dream debut as his team thrashed KKR by 55 runs at Feroz Shah Kotla on Friday. The skipper played a destructive knock of 93 runs from 40 balls that propelled the hosts to a mammoth 219 in 20 overs.  The KKR batting line-up couldn’t really come to the party as wickets fell at regular intervals and despite Russells’ heroics towards the end of the innings - they lost the match by 55 runs. Registering the second win this season, Delhi has cluttered the IPL points table a bit more.

After Gambhir’s decision to step down from the leadership, his absence from the starting eleven had shocked everyone. And addressing the media after the game, Iyer revealed that Gambhir had himself decided to sit out from the playing eleven and it wasn’t the management’s decision.

“I didn't make any call to be honest. It wasn't my decision to drop him. He himself decided to sit out, which was really courageous decision with him being the captain in the previous matches. The respect for him has gone really high. It's really [good to] see when a captain, if he's not playing well, he backs out. Colin came in and gave us the desired start," said Iyer, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Munro set the tone of the game with a thunderous 18-ball 33 and was involved in giving DD an opening stand of 59 - the team's highest opening stand this IPL. The team got the momentum it needed from the powerplay, which helped other batsmen like Iyer and Maxwell to carry forward.

Iyer was quick to point out that the good opening by Prithvi Shaw and the Kiwi batsman was the main difference for both the sides. "It's just that we got a good start. Everyone was aware of what they had to do and contributed really well. It was a team effort. It wasn't an individual game. Everyone stepped up to the mark and started taking responsibility," he said.
