Sandeep Chaudhary clinches India’s first gold in Asian Para Games in javelin throw

Sandeep Chaudhary clinched India’s first gold medal in the javelin throw at the ongoing Asian Para Games with a best throw of 60.01m in the F42-44/61-64 category. India’s medal hunt will continue after bagging five medals from swimming, powerlifting, badminton, and chess on Day 1 of the Games.

Sandeep Chaudhary helped open India’s gold account as he finished on top in the men’s javelin throw in Jakarta on Monday. He managed with a best throw of 60.01m in his third attempt. The F42-44/61-64 category relates to limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement and athletes in this category must compete without the use of prostheses. 

Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Sampath Hetti bagged the silver medal with 59.32m while Iran’s Omidi Ali settled for the bronze with 58.97m.

India had already won two silver and three bronze medals at the Games. Farman Basha claimed the silver and Paramjeet Kumar won the bronze in the men’s 49kg powerlifting event. 

It was an eventful day for the Indian para-swimmers as well, as Devanshi Satijawon clinched the silver in women’s 100 metre butterfly in S-10 category while Suyash Jadhav picked up the bronze in the men’s 200 metre individual medley in SM-7 category.
