India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga has bettered his own world youth record as he set a new one in all the three categories – snatch, clean and jerk and total lift in 67kg weight category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships. Jhili Dalabehera has bagged a silver medal in the women’s 45kg weight category.

India went off to a great start at the Asian Weightlifting Championships as youngster Lalrinnunga went on to set a new youth world record in the 67kg category with two clean lifts (130kg and 134kg) in his three attempts in snatch. He has secured the second place in his group after the record-breaking performance at the event. The 16-year-old earlier had the same record in his name when he had lifted 131kg this year.

In clean and jerk, he lifted 157kg, 163kg in two successful attempts and broke the previous youth world record of 161kg which was set by Kazakhstan’s Saikhan Taisuyev. With a total lift of 297kg, the 16-year-old Indian is now only behind Pakistan’s Talha Talib (304kg) in the group.

The total lift of 297kg at the continental event today is 9kg more than his previous best of 288kg which was a youth world record as well. He had achieved the feat in February in the EGAT Cup where he had managed to clinch a silver medal.

The Mizoram boy had also bagged a gold medal in the Youth Olympics last year in Buenos Aires in the 62kg weight category where he had lifted a total of 274kg (124+150).

After Jerry Lalrinnunga’s record-breaking performance, India has opened its account at the Asian Weightlifting Championships with a silver medal through Jhili Dalabehera who managed to bag a silver medal in the women’s 45kg category. The Odisha weightlifter lifted 167kg to finish at the second position in the women’s A category. She was overtaken only by Thi Vijong of Vietnam who clinched gold.

Dalabehera had won a bronze at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships in the 48kg weight category last year.
