Asian Weightlifting Championships | Ajay Singh, Achinta Sheuli finish at first and third positions in Group B

India’s Ajay Singh and Achinta Sheuli have finished at the first and third places respectively in Group B of the ongoing Asian Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China. Ajay lifted a total weight of 320kg in 81kg category while Sheuli, in the 77kg category lifted a total weight of 297kg. 

After lifting 142kg and 178kg in the men’s 81kg category of Group B, Indian weightlifter is now at the top of the group. However, his final standings will be cleared on Tuesday which will determine his chances of winning a medal at the continental event in China. The bronze medallist from Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships lifted a total weight of 320kg on Monday and finished first among four weightlifters.

Sheuli, on the other hand, lifted 137kg in snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk to finish at third place in the 77kg Group B category. The National Champion finished below Indonesia’s Rahmat Erwin Abdullah and Vietnam’s Pham Tuan Anh after lifting 297kg in total in her category.

Jhili Dalabehera is the only medal winner for India so far at the event as she had won the silver medal in women’s 45kg event. She had lifted 162kg (71kg+91kg) to finish second in the non-Olympic category on Sunday. However, India’s finest female weightlifter Mirabai Chanu had missed out on a medal in spite of producing her personal best in the 49kg category. 

India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga had set three world records in the 67kg category of Group B on Sunday at the Asian Weightlifting Championships as well.
