Sania Mirza voices opinion over Paes-Bopanna deadlock
After achieving the World No.1 status, 13 titles and an unbeaten run of 40 matches with her women’s doubles partner Martina Hingis on the professional tennis circuit, India tennis ace Sania Mirza has her eyes set on clinching a medal in the Olympics and believes that India should send its best team to Rio.
In an interaction with the reporters on the sidelines of a promotional event in Bengaluru on Wednesday, Sania talked about her plans for Olympics and about the partnership with Martina Hingis.
When asked about her mixed doubles partner for Rio, Sania chose to play it down by suggesting that with four months to go for the quadrennial event, it will be too early to pick a team.
“I am going to wait. Four months is a long time. Who knows who is going to be healthy and who won’t. The most important thing is that the best team should be sent. I don’t think now is the right time to make that call,” Sania said, as reported by the Hindu.
She also added any special focus on Olympics may not happen with the schedule already packed with tournament after tournament.
“I have about 11 weeks before Roland Garros and about 14 before the Olympics. We focus on Doha, Indian Wells and Miami (at the moment); that’s how a tennis player’s life goes. We don’t have the luxury to focus on something that is to happen four months from today.
“But when we get there, rest assured we are going to try and win a medal, like every other time,” she added.

In the professional circuit, Sania and her doubles partner Martina Hingis had an amazing start to 2016 winning four back-to-back trophies and been on a 40-match winning streak. The Hyderabad lass now moves on to the Qatar Open, which will start next week, and seemed confident of eclipsing the 44-match winning streak that stands in their way.
“I think we were on 28, in Brisbane; that was the first streak and everyone was talking about it. It’s tough because we try not to think about it, but we keep getting asked.
“We can’t really chase numbers. That’s not how you play tennis. Or any sport.
“We are aware that the next number is 44 (Jana Novotna & Helena Sukova), and we are aware that we can achieve that in Doha. But having said that it’s a tough tournament and there are no guarantees in sport,” Sania said, as reported by the Hindu.
