Indian tennis star Leander Paes and his partner Jeremy Chardy suffered a straight-set loss in the opening round of Men’s Doubles event at the $404,780 Sydney International on Monday.

After the disappointment at the ATP Chennai Open, Leander Paes’ preparations for the Australian Open suffered a major blow at Sydney after he lost the first round match to Brazilian-Canadian third seed pair Marcelo Melo and Daniel Nestor 4-6, 4-6. The Indo-French combo was no match for the third seeds as the match was over in one hour and eight minutes on Court No. 3 of the NSW Tennis Centre.

Paes, who had partnered up with Marcel Granollers at Chennai, was forced to withdrew from the tournament in the quarterfinal with his partner falling ill.

The 42-year old will, however, start the Mixed Doubles event as the defending champion next week, along with Swiss star Martina Hingis.

Sania Mirza, along with her partner Martina Hingis, will enter the court on Tuesday in the opening round of Women’s Doubles event. Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea will also play their first round match today in the Men’s Doubles event.
