Wimbledon 2016 | Mirza and Hingis march on to round 3; Paes knocked out by former partner
Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis remained on course to defend their Wimbledon doubles title with a one-sided 6-3, 6-1 win over the Japanese pair of Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato in the 2nd round on Sunday. However, Leander Paes and Marcin Matkowski were knocked out in their men's doubles 2nd round clash.
Despite being broken once in the first set, World No.1 pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis comfortably won the first set 6-3. While the Japanese pair showed some sort of resistance in the first set, the second set turned out to be a rout. Hingis and Mirza raced to a 4-0 lead, before dropping their first game of the set, but that only delayed the inevitable. The Indo-Swiss pair won the second set 6-1, and with it the match in just 52 minutes.
The No.1 seeds will now face the unseeded pair of Christina McHale and Jelena Ostapenko, who had pulled of an upset in the last round by knocking out 13th seeds Vania King and Alla Kudryavtseva, in their third round clash.
Earlier, Leander Paes' poor run of form in the men's doubles continued as he and his partner Marcin Matkowski were knocked out by number 10 seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers. Kontinen and Peers broke their opponents' serve thrice in the match to win game 6-3, 6-2 in just over one hour.
With this win, Peers, who was a former doubles partner of Paes, avenged the defeat he had faced against this pair in the Malaysia Open a couple years back. Meanwhile, Paes’ Grand Slam drought in men's doubles was also prolonged with his last doubles grand slam title coming way back in 2013, when he won the US Open with Radek Stepanek.
