Despite failing to complete the 'SanTina Slam' at the French Open, World No.1 pairing of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza became the 1st team to book their place in the WTA Finals, which is set to be held from October 24 in Singapore. The Indo-Swiss duo are the defending champions of this tournament.

“Qualifying for the WTA Finals for the second year in-a-row with Sania is very exciting,” said Martina Hingis in a statement, reported the Hindu.

Sania Mirza will be aiming to win the WTA Finals doubles title for the third time in a row. She lifted the crown with her then partner Cara Black in 2014, then she returned to the Finals with Hingis in 2015, where they defeated the Spanish pairing of Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro in the final to win the year-ending tournament.

“Winning the WTA Finals in Singapore last year as well as multiple tournaments in such a short period of time has been an unbelievable experience.

“I’m very much looking forward to competing in Singapore once again to try to make it three in a row,” Sania Mirza was quoted as saying by the Hindu.

The duo crashed out in the third round of the recently-concluded French Open, and this early qualification will hand them a much-needed confidence boost as they head into the Wimbledon.
