India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas suffered a first round exit at the Barcelona Open today. The pair went down 6-7 (3), 6-7 (2) to the top seeded Finnish-Australian combination of Henri Kontinen and John Peers after winning the Monte Carlo Masters last week.

The Indo-Uruguayan pair had defeated Kontinen and Peers, currently ranked No 1 and 2 in the world respectively, in the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo and the Finnish-Australian pair exacted their revenge here.

It was a close encounter with both sets going into tie-breaker. However, the top seeds won crucial points to close it out and progress to the next round.

With the French Open round the corner, the defeat has come as a reality check for the Indo-Uruguayan duo, targeting to win the major. Bopanna is ranked 18 in the world while Cuevas is 24 in doubles and 26 in singles.
