Citi Open | Yuki Bhambri reaches the second round as Ramkumar Ramanathan crashes out
Yuki Bhambri progressed to the second round of the Citi Open with an easy 7-5, 2-0 win over American Stefan Kozlov as top seeded Ramkumar Ramanathan was stunned 4-6, 1-6 by Argentine Guido Pella. Bhambri will next take on sixth seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils in the second round.
Yuki Bhambri continued his winning run at the Washington Open as he overcame young American Stefan Kozlov with ease in the Round of 64. The 200 ranked Indian had taken the first set 7-5 and was 2-0 up in the second when the 19-year-old American, placed 68 spots above him, was forced to retire due to injury. The 25- year-old Indian will next take on sixth seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils in the second round
However, it wasn't a good day for Bhambri's compatriot Ramkumar Ramanathan, who went down to Argentine Guido Pella 4-6, 1-6 in straight sets.
Both Bhambri and Ramanathan had made it to the main draw of the Citi Open with wins in the qualifying rounds on Monday. While Ramkumar beat 11th seed Marinko Matosevic 7-5, 6-3, Bhambri thrashed ninth seed Liam Broady 6-2, 6-4. Moreover, had they managed to keep their respective winning runs going in the first round, there was a chance of an all Indian meeting in the second round.
Finally, Ramkumar and Bhambri are not the only Indians in the tournament as Rohan Bopanna will team up with Donald Young to form a wild card pair and take on the experienced team of Daniel Nestor and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
