Rogers Cup | Federer to face Alexander Zverev in the summit clash; Bopanna-Dodig to fight for men's doubles title
Roger Federer overcame a resilient Robin Haase in straight-sets in the Montreal Masters semi-final to set up the final date with German ace Alexander Zverev. Meanwhile, Indian ace Rohan Bopanna has also advanced to the Men’s Doubles final with partner Ivan Dodig in a hard-fought game.
The Swiss international has remained unbeaten at Grand Slam and Masters 1000 level this year and kept his phenomenal form intact with a 6-3 7-6 (7-5) over Dutchman Robin Haase in the Rogers Cup semi-final. He is set to face Germany’s Alexander Zverev on Sunday, who had it much easier against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov winning 6-4, 7-5.
Shapovalov, who was playing Challenger-level tournaments only two weeks ago, became the youngest player to reach a Masters 1000 Series tournament with a winning run this week that included knocking off top seed Rafael Nadal and 2009 U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro.
Now, the young German Zverev will also pose a tough challenge for the 36-year-old, who has now extended his winning streak to 16 games and is also closing in on a third Canadian Masters title. Federer has previously won the Montreal Masters back in 2004 and 2006 and should be confident of regaining it.
The 18-time Grand Slam said, “I'm happy - most happy that I'm actually really healthy going into the finals," said second seed Federer, who has won Masters titles in Indian Wells and Miami in 2017. I haven't wasted too much energy. I've been able to keep points short. I've been really clean at the net. I think my concentration and just my playing has gone up a notch. I'm just playing better."
A win in the final would surely guarantee him the number two seed ahead of the US Open, giving him the chance to chase the ATP top spot next week in Cincinnati where Andy Murray, the current incumbent, will not play.
Elsewhere, the Indian-Croatian pairing of Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig reached their first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final as a team, as they beat the South African-US pairing Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram 4-6, 7-6(8), 11-9. They face fifth-seeded French duo of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in the final.
