Venus Williams suffers an emotional breakdown when questioned about the fatal car crash

World No. 11 Venus Williams failed to hold back her emotions and started crying when the media constantly questioned her regarding her involvement in the fatal car crash. The tenth seed beat Belgium's Elise Mertens 7-6, 6-4 in the first round of Wimbledon despite her emotional state.
Venus Williams was reported to be at fault in a car crash that occurred on June 9th which resulted in the death of Jerome Barson, 78. The five-time Wimbledon champion could face a wrongful death lawsuit regarding the same.
Williams crashed her car at a four-way intersection near her home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and was accused of failing to yield the right of way to Linda Barson. According to the reports, Linda Barson saw Williams "cut in front of her" while she was crossing the junction on a green light which caused the crash. Jerome Barson was on the passenger seat and suffered spinal injuries along with multiple internal injuries and was taken to the Florida trauma centre following the accident where he died 13-days later.
When the media brought up the matter in a media conference after her round one at Wimbledon Williams replied,"There are no words to describe how devastating [it is]. I'm completely speechless."
The 35-year old couldn't hold her emotions in check and started crying while she left the room to compose herself before returning to answer another couple of questions on the match.
Earlier in the interview, Williams expressed her love for the game of tennis while reflecting on life.
"Tennis is still the love of my life. It gives me joy," she said
"Life, you can't prepare for everything. I prepared for a lot of matches, tried to get ready for whatever my opponent will throw at you, but you can't prepare for everything.
"I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. That's all I can say about it. That's what I've learned." she added.
However, despite the trauma, the five-time Wimbledon champion defeated 21-year old Elise Mertens 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 to sail into the second round of the Grand Slam event.
