Bernard Tomic stands by his "bored" remark, made after Wimbledon loss
Tennis star Bernard Tomic believes he did nothing wrong in expressing his boredom for the game after his loss at the hands of Mischa Zverev in the first round at Wimbledon. Tomic also stated that his situation won't allow him to quit tennis while revealing that he has never loved the game.
Tomic has once again made controversial statements after his interview at the All England Club following his premature exit from Wimbledon earlier this month. The 24-year old had justified his lackluster performance in a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Mischa Zverev by stating that he was bored and couldn't care less about advancing in the prestigious Grand Slam event. The Australian had also admitted to taking a medical timeout just because he wanted to disrupt Zverev's rhythm and was not playing himself.
Tomic's comments and actions not only received a huge backlash from the tennis fraternity, but the 24-year old was also fined a hefty $15000 and lost his racquet sponsors. However, Tomic decided to stand by his comments.
“I don’t regret what I said. That’s why I said it to piss a few people off,” Tomic was quoted saying by AFP.
“I didn’t come from a rich family. We had no money.
“And now living in all these lavish houses and property around the world, it’s my choice. It’s something that I’ve worked for.”
The 24-year old made more controversial statements advising the fans to not buy tickets to watch him play.
“Don’t come, Just watch on TV, you don’t have to pay anything. Throughout my
The lack of motivation and commitment to the game has resulted in the Australian sliding down to the 73rd position in the men's rankings from his career high ranking of 17. The 24-year old revealed he did not love the game and is unable to quit it because of his situation.
“Don’t play tennis. Do something you love and enjoy, because it’s a grind, and it’s a tough, tough, tough life. My position, I’m trapped. I have to do it,” he said.
“Tennis chose me. It’s something I never fell in love with. You know, I like it.”
