US Open Round Up| Roger Federer survives Mikhail Youzhny scare as Shelby Rogers beats Daria Gavrilova in a historical match
Roger Federer got a huge scare as he took five sets yet again to overcome a 34-year-old Youzhny, who suffered most of the game with a cramp but still managed to expose Federer’s vulnerabilities. Daria Gavrilova went down fighting an epic three-hour 33-minute clash against America’s Shelby Rogers.
Against the usual kinds of Roger Federer games, which are either classic or straightforward, Day 4 saw the Swiss ace stumbling and erring his way to victory. It has already raised questions among fans and critics about how far can he go in the tournament.
Following the five-set win against Frances Tiafoe in the last round, Federer had to beat Youzhny 6-1, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a bizarre game. The Russian, just a year younger to Federer, was widely expected to be an easy run for the title
The game had a flying start with Federer winning the first set 6-1. However, the sloppiness soon began to creep in as he lost the next two sets and had to fight very hard for the third. Youzhny won an impressive eight of 12 points at the start of the second, before Federer broke for the third time. It was followed by a tightness in Federer’s movements and the crowd looked overly concerned.
The Russian was soon seen going into minor meltdown as his trainer was called upon for repairs. Although Youzhny never really recovered from it, Federer still managed to make it pretty hard for himself before having one of the least convincing wins in his career.
After winning the Cincinnati Masters 1000 two weeks ago, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov went down in a lop-sided game against 19-year-old Andrey Rublev. The Russian youngster had a comfortable 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-3 win with his opponent making as many as 11 double faults.
After a colorful encounter with countryman Nick Kyrgios last game, John Millman is last Australia’s last man standing in US Open. He continued his winning run against Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri in a comfortable 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 to make to the last 32 in New York for the first time. Gael Monfils overcame America’s Donald Young in a dragged but comfortable 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 win.
The women’s singles match between Daria Gavrilova and Shelby Rogers presented a game of epic proportions with the American winning eventually. Australian ace Gavrilova had arrived to the exciting game at the back of a six-match winning streak and was the favourite by all means, but little did she know that she will have to play the longest women’s match in US Open history to earn the next one.
A 90-minute deciding set saw 11 service breaks, 76 winners and 111 unforced errors, before the Australian went down 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) to Rogers, but not before putting up a mammoth fight. After an exemplary pitched tennis battle, the American will now face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the third round.
