Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic saw a shocking elimination in the third round of the US Open as he went down to Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman in an evenly matched game. Meanwhile, Venus Williams kept her form intact as she cruised into the fourth round overcoming Greek’s Maria Sakkari.

World No. 33 Diego Schwartzman managed to go past the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time as he overcame the fifth seed Marin Cilic 4-6 7-5 7-5 6-4 in a hard-fought match. The 2014 US Open champion has been out of the game due to adductor strain and was playing his first event since July's Wimbledon final loss to Roger Federer.

The 25-year-old Argentine managed to break him nine times successfully in the game, four times in the third set itself leaving hardly any chance for Cilic. He will now play 16th seed Lucas Pouille, who overcame Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 in the third round.

Kyle Edmund of Britain suffered a heart break as he had to pull out of the game because of a back injury. He was playing young Denis Shapovalov. Edmund was the only hope of England left in US Open and he tried stretching it as far as possible. The 22-year old was playing his 10th match in 14 days and the crowd saw his trainer on the pitch thrice before he finally withdrew. 18-year-old Shapovalov was leading comfortably 3-6 6-3 6-3 1-0 at Flushing Meadows against a struggling Edmund. Shapovalov will face Spanish 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta next.

Borna Coric of Croatia lost to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4 6-3 6-2 after an impressive win over fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the second round. Anderson plays Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi. Germany’s Mischa Zverev ousted the No. 10 John Isner in a comfortable 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (5) game to reach the fourth round.

There are no former title winners in the bottom half of the draw, guaranteeing a first-time US Open finalist.

Title favouriteVenus Williams entered the fourth round of the US Open with an easy 6-3, 6-4 victory over Maria Sakkari of Greece. This was Williams’ 74th win at the US Open, which sees her go past Steffi Graf for the fourth most wins by a woman in the Open era.

Third-seeded Garbine Muguruza overcame 31st-seeded Magdalena Rybarikova in a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 win. She will next face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the round of 16, who progressed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Caroline Garcia.

India had mixed results in the Grand Slam. As the men’s doubles pairing of Leander Paes and Purav Raja edged past Serbia’s Janko Tipsarević and Viktor Troicki 6-1, 6-3, but both Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza crashed out of their respective rounds.

Bopanna was paired with Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas in the men’s doubles category as they went down 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 to Italy’s Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini in the second round. Mirza, paired with mixed doubles partner Ivan Dodig of Croatia, lost to the Latvian-French pair of Jelena Ostapenko and Fabrice Martin 7-5, 3-6, 6-10, after starting the women’s doubles on a winning note with China’s Peng Shuai.
