US Open| Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna progress as Maria Sharapova crashes out in pre-quarter finals

Indian aces Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna advanced to the quarter finals after their respective wins in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles event. Maria Sharapova’s winning run came to a shuddering halt as she went down 5-7 6-4 6-2 to Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the pre-quarter finals.

Partnered with Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski, India’s Rohan Bopanna advanced to the third round of the US open after a comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win over the Spanish-American duo of María Jose Martinez Sanchez and Nicholas Monroe.

Sania Mirza continued her impressive run in the women’s doubles event as the Indo-Chinese pair of Mirza- Peng Shuai defeated the Romanian-Spanish duo of Sorana Cirstea and Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 to progress the round of 8.

In women’s singles event, Maria Sharapova's scintillating run ended against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova as the 16th seed won 5-7 6-4 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals. She faces America’s Sloane Stephens next. Venus Williams, though, continued her winning streak as she overcame Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 3-6 6-1. She will now face Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova.

18-seeded Gael Monfils had looked uncomfortable from the very start of the game, when he arrived at the court with heavy strapping on his right knee. He has already suffered an Achilles injury, a knee injury and an ankle injury this season and taking on Belgium’s David Goffin with a persisting knee injury looked an uphill task.

He lost the first set 7-5 and things got worse from there. He seemed disinterested in the second set as his knee kept him second best throughout the game. He was already down 5-0 before he asked for the trainer to be brought on, However, he couldn’t continue the game after winning one set. Goffin advances to the fourth round with 7-5, 5-1 win, where he faces Andrey Rublev from Russia.

Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi failed to reach the quarter finals as he went down to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4. In the other game, Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman knocked out France’s Lucas Pouille 7-6(3) 7-5 2-6 6-2 to advance to the fourth round.
