Nick Kyrgios : Don't put me in the same category as Bernard Tomic

Nick Kyrgios has distanced himself from compatriot Bernard Tomic saying that the latter has "lost his way" and that he doesn't make a lot of sense these days. This year Tomic has missed more tournaments than he has played, which has seen his ranking plummet from a career high 17 to 146.

Tomic made headlines for all the wrong reasons at Wimbledon, after his exit from the tournament, when he admitted to feigning an injury to take a medical timeout because he was "bored" with tennis. He was fined $20000 and was dumped by his racquet sponsor Head.

"You’d also be wrong if you tried to lump me in the same category as Bernard Tomic," Kyrgios wrote in a blog for www.playersvoice.com.au.

"Bernie has lost his way. We were pretty good mates when I was younger.

"I obviously didn’t know the tennis tour too well back then and we were guys of similar age, representing the same country, on the road at many of the same tournaments.

"But a lot has changed since then. He needs to figure out what he wants to do."

Tomic has been a member of the Davis Cup team for quite a while now but current captain Lleyton Hewitt, this week, said that Tomic was "a long way off" from a recall after choosing world number 185 John Millman in Tomic's place. Kyrgios, who will lead Australia's Davis Cup charge in the semi-final against Belgium, was also critical of Tomic stating that he keeps on contradicting himself on multiple occasions.

"I can’t relate to anything (Tomic) says anymore," Kyrgios explained.

"He says one thing and he does the other. And he contradicts himself all the time.

"He says tennis doesn’t make him happy, that he doesn’t really like the game, yet he says the only thing that will really make him happy is winning a grand slam. It doesn’t make sense at all."

Anyone who knows Nick Kyrgios knows that he is not one of those who will be readily considered to be a role model for young tennis players. He was banned for a period of eight weeks and fined $25,000 by the ATP during 2016 Shanghai Masters for "throwing a match" against Mischa Zverev. But when someone as erratic as Kyrgios questions you as a professional, you need to do some self assessment
