India’s number two singles player Karman Kaur Thandi won her WTA tour match as she beat Chinese player Lu Jiajing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a two hour 42-minute clash in the first round of Jiangxi Open in China. Meanwhile, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Leander Paes bowed out in the first round of the Atlanta Open.

20-year old Karman Thaur Thandi who achieved a career-high WTA singles ranking of World No. 225 earlier this month, made her way to her first win in the WTA tour circuit in the opening round of Jiangxi Open in China. Thandi won her first match against China’s Lu Jiajing 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a two-hour-42-minute clash yesterday.

Karman will partner Sabina Sharipova as she was slated to play in the first round doubles match against the Chinese pair of Xinyu Jiang and Qianhui Tang. However, Indian tennis ace Ankita Raina lost her match in straight sets to second seed Qiang Wang of China on Monday.

Meanwhile, at ITF Futures in Taipei, India’s outing in the doubles event came to an abrupt end after Ashmitha Easwaramurthi and Mihika Yadav lost their first-round matches. Ashmitha, however, qualified for the main draw of the women’s singles event with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Japanese player Eimi Friant.

In Atlanta Open, the man of the moment, Ramkumar Ramanathan lost 4-6, 4-6 to American world number five Taylor Fritz while Indian legend Leander Paes and his American partner James Cerretani lost their opener 5-7, 1-6 to American pair of Mike Bryan and Frances Tiafoe. Prajnesh Gunneswaran also lost in the first round to Slovakia’s Lukáš Lacko 2-6, 2-6 (an ATP 250 series tournament) in the same tournament. Compatriot Purav Raja, however, won his first round doubles match as he partnered with Great Britain’s Ken Skupski to beat Lithuania’s Ričardas Berankis and Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri 6-4, 6-3.
