Indian men bow out of Wimbledon Qualifiers, Ankita Raina to face World no 422 in first round
Prajnesh Gunneswaran, Sumit Nagal, and Ramkumar Ramanathan were ousted of the Wimbledon men singles qualifiers while Ankita Raina still has to play her first round against Maia Lumsden. Aditi Kalyanpur, Niki Poonacha, Mihika Yadav, and Vasanti Shinde progressed in their respective Futures events.
The Indian men had a tough outing in London on Monday as all of them suffered a similar fate and crashed out of Wimbledon Qualifiers after the first round. On the other hand, India's no 1 singles player Ankita Raina to face Maia Lumsden of Great Britain ranked 422 in the World.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran was suffering from abdominal strain and could not perform his best as he lost to Germany's Tobais Kamke 1-6,4-6. Prajnesh, who was in good form coming into the qualifiers, also lost to
“I just could not serve well due to abdominal strain,” a dejected Prajnesh told PTI from London.
The exit means he has to wait to next year's Australian Open to enter the main draw of Grand Slam as he will miss US Open due to the Asian Games. Sumit Nagal ranked 239th in the world, was no match to Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, ranked 192 as he was thrashed 2-6, 0-6.
Ramkumar Ramanathan who is seeded 15th in the Qualifiers, lost 3-6, 4-6 to Italian Simone Bolleli ranked 124th in world.
