Roger Federer on Alexander Zverev: I am always ready to help younger players
Roger Federer has opened up about his close relationship with German youngster Alexander Zverev claiming that he has always been ready to guide younger players. He further revealed that he is a big fan of the 21-year tennis ace and knew he had big things to offer the sport of tennis in the future.
German youngster Alexander Zverev has been widely tipped to be the next big thing in the world of tennis when current maestros Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal eventually lay down their racquets. The tall and lanky German has exhibited tons of potential this season, excelling on tour as he won the Madrid Open and reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at the French Open last month.
Training with Federer more often has surely helped the German as he is doing at the moment, which has seen him rise to number three in the world rankings now ahead of competitions. The Swiss legend opened up about his relationship with the German ahead of the All England Open.
“'I am not his coach and the mentor concept is not fair. If we train together and there is something that hits me, or he asks me something, I tell him something. I am always ready to help younger players, not only Alexander Zverev. Obviously, they are still my opponents, but at 36, I am more relaxed,” Federer told Tennis Magazin in Halle.
Federer backed Zverev to eventually break his major tournament duck by winning his first Grand Slam in the near future.
“Others do it, but then they struggle in the Masters (1000). Zverev is the opposite. It will clearly change, I am convinced about it. He can play very well on all the surfaces. He knows it as well. (Playing) 2017 final here (in Halle) will have given him confidence. I am a big fan of him, he is a good guy,” Federer added.
