Though Roger Federer failed to win the Paris Masters, losing the semis to Novak Djokovic, the tournament turned out to be the maestro’s showboating playground. After executing a stupendous backspin winner against Kei Nishikori, Federer won the crowd with a stunning reflex winner against Djokovic.

In all honesty, a 37-year-old Federer wasn’t the favourite to beat the World No. 1 Serbian, who has just returned to his peak following a harrowing injury. However, that didn’t mean that Federer won’t make him sweat and Djokovic had to endure much more than he expected in the semi-final match before he eventually won 6-7, 7-5, 6-7.

The incident took place during the first set that Djokovic was leading 4-3 with an advantage while returning Federer’s serve. Federer’s down the T serve was returned well by Djokovic straight in the middle and the Swiss ace took his time before whipping it to Djokovic’s right to what looked like a sure winner.

However, Djokovic in his trademark sliding style reached it with his return hitting the net on its way up. An onrushing Federer was caught off guard with the sudden deflection of the net, as he was approaching with the idea of hitting a winner on the incoming volley. But, just as a winner is someone who is always adjusting to adversity, Federer stuck out his racquet at the last moment which was a sheer reflex as the ball fell on the other court with a little bit of spin miles ahead of Djokovic, who was standing at the baseline.

While Federer raised his hand and walked back basking in the crowd’s vociferous acknowledgment of what he had just done, Djokovic stood there for a second or two stunned at what he had just seen. He smiled in bewilderment before both got on with the game.
