Billie Jean King Cup 2022 | India beat Indonesia 2-1, rise to fourth position
The Indian women's team finally registered a win at the Billie Jean King Cup 2022 in the Asia/Oceania Group I, beating Indonesia 2-1 in Antalya, Turkey on Wednesday. Playing on the clay courts, Rutuja Bhosale, ranked 477, won against Beatrice Gumulya 6-4, 6-1 in one hour and 23 minutes.
Later, in the second tie of the day, India’s top-ranked women’s singles player, Ankita Raina registered a comfortable win over Aldila Sutjiadi. The 319th ranked Raina showed her class against the world no.350 Indonesian girl, as she won the match 6-1, 6-2 in 57 minutes.
In the last match of the day, in the doubles match, Riya Bhatia and Sowjanya Bavisetti teamed up against Jessy Rompies and Aldila Sutjiadi. The Indian pair of Riya-Sowjanya lost 6-4, 7(9)-6(7), 2-6 in two hours 30 minutes. But with a win in this rubber, the Indian team registered their first points of the tournament this year, after losing to China and Japan.
This means they are in the fourth spot now, with South Korea in third place. On the other hand, Indonesia and New Zealand have not won a tie yet, and are in fifth and sixth places, respectively. Meanwhile, only the top two teams from Group 1 will be promoted to the play-offs while the fifth and sixth-placed teams will be relegated to next year’s Group II zone.
