Pro Wrestling league: Punjab Royals decimate UP Warriors 6-1
Punjab Royals thrashed UP Warriors 6-1 in a lopsided encounter at the Gurunanak stadium, in Ludhiana, Punjab on Sunday. Punjab Royals sealed the match in the shortest possible time winning the first four bouts.
Punjab Royals won the toss and chose to block the 48kg woman’s tie while the UP Warriors blocked the 57kg men’s tie.
Ganzorig Mandakhnran of UP Warriors fought the first bout against Rajneesh of Punjab Royals in the 65kg category. Ganzorig took a two-point lead at the end of first round, but failed to convert it as Rajneesh fought his way back in the second round to make it 2-2. Rajneesh then took six straight points to go 8-2. As the second round came to a close, Ganzorig clawed back to make it 7-8, but his efforts were not good enough to save the game.
In the second bout of the match, Vasilisa Marzaliuk of Punjab was pitted against Alina Stadinik Makhinia of UP Warriors in the 69kg woman’s category. Vasilisa struck first as she scored the two point in the opening minute. Alina got her first point in the next round after pushing her Punjab counterpart outside the mat. The bout was quite fast-paced, as both the players were going for the attack. But Vasilisa held on till the end as her two point lead from the first round was enough in the end. The victory took the home team to a 2-0 lead in the seven-bout match.
Parveen Rana took to the mat for the Punjab Royals and was to fight Purevjav Unurbat of Mongolia who came out for the UP Warriors. Purevjav who came in as a replacement for Sushil Kumar trailed 0-2 in the first round of the 74kg bout. The second round began with Purevjav starting aggressively. He raced away to four points within the first minute. But a brilliant leg-lock by Praveen in the next minute made the scores equal at 4-4. Praveen eventually secured the third win for his team as he won the bout through last point victory.
In the next bout, Jargalsaikhan Chuluunbat of Mongolia fought for Punjab Royals against Joginder Kumar for the UP Warriors in the 125kg men’s category. Jargalsaikhan started the first round with an early lead of two points. Joginder was rolled off the mat by the Mongolian as the score board read 8-0. Jargalsaikhan scored two more points to make it 10-0 and eliminated Joginder through technical knockout. The win helped the Punjab Royals to take an unassailable lead of 4-0 to virtually win the match with three more games to go.
Geeta Phogat, the captain of Punjab Royals, was the next to enter the mat and was pitted against Sarita in the 58kg woman’s category. Sarita put up a good show, as she rolled Geeta outside the yellow-strip of the mat and secured two points. In the second round, Geeta started much more aggressive and managed to free herself of an ankle hold and rolled over Sarita to make it 2-2. Later on, Geeta tried to escape from the grasp of Sarita but stepped outside the mat to hand the Punjab Royals another point and eventually the bout.
Priyanka Phogat came in for the Punjab Royals next, while Babita Kumar represented the UP Warriors in the 53kg woman’s encounter. Babita used her experience to take the first two points with a good lock, but Priyanka came back to make it 2-2 in the first round after managing to push her opponent out of the mat. Babita took the lead again at 4-2 in the second round after a good hold, but could not hold on to it as Priyanka came back to make it 4-4. A brilliant lock again in the last 10 seconds by Babita helped take the score to 6-4, as UP Warriors registered their sole victory of the match to make it 1-5.
Mausam Khatri faced off against Satyavrat Kadian of UP Warriors in the last bout of the evening in the 97kg men’s bout. Mausam scored two points in the second minute of the match, with a strong take-down and continued the lead into the second round. Mausam was awarded another point from a foul by Satyavrat and sealed the bout finally at 5-0.
With this victory, Punjab secured the fourth spot in the league table.
The UP Warriors will next play against Dilli Veer on Tuesday, while Punjab Royals will face Dilli Veer on Friday.
